-sculpture-

This sculpture is 36" tall by 12" wide and 18" deep made from patinaed and painted laser cut steel and faux furrr. Conceptually, it is a bit of an amalgamation. Its original form was conceived of as a temporal anomaly folding space time and creating a pathway through space, think Donnie Darko or Contact. But admittedly I became a bit obsessed with figuring out how to create the final shape using a fabrication method I've been developing for this series.

When I welded the last seam and stood it up I literally laughed out loud, for obvious reasons, and opted to finish it in a way that would hopefully de-emphasize its shape. The initial patina was a hail Mary of techniques and overlays that I was trying for the first time. It did not pan out (pictured below), and I was at a loss as to the final finish. The following week I was rummaging through old patinas and paint in my garage and picked up a half used rattle can of metallic gold. Again, I laughed out loud. Not only was I creating a giant phallus projecting out of the wall, but now I was going to paint it gold. Hell yes!

The faux fur was always a part of the plan but I wasn't sure about the color until I actually started painting it. I knew the gold would clash with the multi-color fur so I tried out a gold to black ombre at the top and added the fur.

All of a sudden it was a cactus. The cactus reference was in back of my mind when I was originally designing the shape, but had been dropped as a concept a while back. I decided to embrace it's cactus-ness while trying to pull back in some of the undertones of my original temporal anomaly concept (with a BA in conceptual art and a Masters in Architecture I can post rationalize just about anything).

Finally dubbed "Torch" this sculpture is a nod to Peruvian Torch aka San Pedro. Conceptually, Mescaline enters one into an altered state of perception and is a euphoric singularity-like experience of folding space and time. See, there is a nice conceptual bow tied around a giant golden 🐓, I mean 🌵. Your welcome!
